€25.3M spend for Cavan Road Infrastructure this year
The total road works programme for County Cavan in 2018 will comprise a spend of €25.3M - with 91% of the funding coming from government and the balance of nine per cent (€2.3M) coming from council coffer. According to Director of Services Joe McLoughlin, that local contribution is made up from property tax and rates and other miscelleanous sources of income.
After hours of debate behind closed doors on the previous Friday as to what road projects in the county should be prioritised, the elected representatives sanctioned the programme at their official February monthly meeting on Monday.
Fine Gael's Cllr Paddy O’Reilly proposed the adoption of the programme and this was seconded by Cllr Damian Brady.
Mr McLoughlin said there was a challenge there to increase the level of funding input from the County Council’s own resources. He said there is a need to get that to a higher level than has pertained for the last three years. It has been kept at €2.3M.
Resurfacing works will form a good chunk of the budget with councillors set to thrash out at municipal district level the local roads to be prioritised for that spend. Councillors had all expressed concerns about the deteriorating condition of some routes in the county. Following the meeting, Fianna Fáil's Sarah O'Reilly sent this video footage of a 'sink hole' on a road in Kill. It was sent to her by a constituent and the hole has since been repaired.
