A burglary a day in January

Seven burglaries have been reported over the past week in the north Cavan area, while another in the west of the county is being linked to the same gang who abandoned their crashed car and fled across fields near Newtowngore, Co Leitrim, at the weekend.

Cash and jewellery were taken following break-ins at houses in the Redhills area, at Kilnacross, Killabandrick, and two at Killoughter, which occurred on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning of ast week, January 30-31.
An attempted break-in at a property in the Ballyhaise area was foiled, prompting those involved to make good their escape.
Gardaí are particularly interested in attaining information with regard to two people seen in a car with a “loud-sounding exhaust” understood to have been spotted in the area around the time of the break-ins.
Further burglaries were also reported to have occurred at a holiday home in the Mountnugent area and a property at Crossdoney, from which roof-tiles and felting material was taken.
It brings to 30, or almost one a day for each day of January, the number of thefts from or attempted break-ins to property and cars across the county.

Gang members flee crashed car

The burglary at Burren, Doogarry, near Ballyconnell, last Saturday, meanwhile, has been connected to a string of burglaries in the Ballinamore and Newtowngore areas.
The follow-up investigation centres on the discovery and seizure of a black Saab car found crashed in the townland of Drumshingore. The discovery came after four males were disturbed after they were found trespassing on property earlier that evening, at around 8.15pm.
It's thought that, after the crash, the men abandoned their vehicle and made off across the fields. Despite the best efforts among people living in the locality, and gardaí who arrived on the scene a short time later, no arrests were made.
The car used was bearing a set of false '06 CN' registration plates and gardaí suspect that the occupants were involved in four burglaries reported in the Ballinamore area that same evening, where varying amounts of cash and jewellery were taken.
A container of coins taken from a house in the Newtowngore area is all that was recovered.

Candelabra recovered

Gardaí in Cavan, meanwhile, have recovered and are in the process of returning a candelabra understood to have been taken during refurbishment works from Bruskey Church last year.
The property was recovered in a field, found abandoned in the Carrickaboy area in East Cavan.
