Orange warning for snow and ice tonight

Irish Weather service Met Eireann has issued a Orange Weather warning for Ulster counties Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal as further snowfall is expected his evening and into tonight.

An Atlantic depression will cross Ireland this evening and early tonight bringing with it freezing temperatures and the threat of icy conditions and further snowfall across the region.

The warning, which is in place from 6pm later this evening and will run until midnight, says: “This will be followed by scattered snow showers later in the night and Thursday. At present, the main risk of appreciable accumulations is limited to Ulster.”

A weather warning had already been in place after Storm Fionn brought high winds, snow and sleet across many parts of the county overnight.

There were also heavy falls of snow in Northern Ireland, where the vast majority of schools will be closed today.

Around 1,000 homes, farms and businesses in Cavan and Monaghan are understood to be still left without power, which is unlikely to be restored until later afternoon after a conductor was damaged.

The Road Safety Authority and AA Roadwatch meanwhile have again urged motorists to take care on the roads.

Salting crews with Cavan County Council have been treating main national, regional and local routes, but The Anglo-Celt understands that people living in rural areas are still facing difficult conditions in some parts.

The highest accumulations of snow were reported in the highest parts of the county, at Glangevlin and Glan Gap as well as Bailieborough overnight.
