Hallowe’en ‘horror’ at savage street beating
A man was viciously beaten to the point of unconsciousness by a golf-club wielding gang before a vehicle appeared to be driven at those attempting to assist the victim at the weekend.
Gardaí in the Ballyjamesduff area are understood to the investigating the alleged incident, which occurred at Percy French Place at approximately 9.30am on Saturday October 28 last.
“It was like something out of a horror film,” a local woman told The Anglo-Celt, reticent as many in the area were to be named on record for fear of possible future reprisals. “There are families with young children living nearby, it wasn’t right.”
The early morning incident is understood to have occurred following a party at a house in the area, after which up to four men are said to have been assaulted.
Eye witnesses said that one man was badly beaten by assailants armed with golf clubs, while lying prone on the ground, before it’s understood others intervened in an attempt to quell the out-of-control situation.
It’s when those persons attempted to provide on-the-spot medical assistance to the now unconscious victim, that a vehicle appeared to be driven at them.
One onlooker said a number of people then fled the scene as gardaí and emergency medical services arrived.
Another local person described what occurred at the weekend as “absolute madness”.
“There is no place for that in this town. The gardaí need to do something, there are people afraid to go outside their doors after this.”
At the time of going to print, no arrests had been made and Garda investigations were continuing.
However it’s understood no statement of complaint has, as yet, been forthcoming.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochána confirmed they are investigating an incident at Percy French Place where “four men aged between 27 years and 38 years were allegedly assaulted”.
“Two of the males were admitted to hospital to be treated for non life threatening injuries.”
