Killeshandra school reunion this weekend
Past pupils and staff of St Brigid's school in Killeshandra will have the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane this weekend. Scoil Bhride will host its first reunion with the school gates open to past pupils, retired staff and those with an interest in the history of the school, which has been operating since the early 1900s.
The school reunion programme runs over Saturday and Sunday with refreshments available in the school over the two days.
Past pupils will have access to in excess of 500 photos from the past. The photos submitted by past pupils will be on display in the school itself together with roll books and a re-enactment of an old classroom setting.
Book launch
An integral part of the reunion programme is the launch of the book. Legacy of leaarning. The book is full of past pupil memories and photographs of pupils and teachers who are all part of the history of St Brigids. Among the photos included in the book is one of a visit to Scoil Bhride by Margaret Pearse. She visited the school in 1945, a sister of Padraig Pearse she served as a TD and Senator following the 1916 Rising. The book will be on sale over the weekend at a cost of €10.
The reunion programme begins with a meet and greet on Saturday at 2.30pm followed the book launch at 3pm. Legacy of learning will be launched by Thomas O Raghallaigh, a past principal of Scoil Bhride.
Flag raising
At 3.30pm there will be a flag raising ceremony, two flags, a Green Flag for water conservation and a Health Promotion flag. The school will remain open throughout the afternoon for visitors wishing to view the displays and roll books.
On Sunday, 11am Mass in St Brigids church will be celebrated in memory of deceased past pupils and staff of the school, the school itself will then be open to the public for viewing the memorabilia on display.
In addition to the school memories on display the organising committee have arranged a number of slideshows and displays showcasing the local amenities and many attractions in the Killeshandra area.
