Sollaghan Bridge flooding to be examined

Cavan County Council is to look into issues that have arose at Sollaghan Bridge just months after a major investment programme, writes Thomas Lyons. The matter was highlighted at the recent meeting of the Ballyjamesduff Municipal District Authority by Fianna Fáil councillor, Philip Brady.
He raised the issue in a notice of motion. Speaking to The Anglo-Celt, Cllr Brady explained the background to the matter: “Sollaghan Bridge is on the border between Gowna and Mullahoran. There were works undertaken on the bridge last summer. I believe that the cost was in the region of €225,000. Shortly after, the work was finished the area flooded.”
At the recent district meeting, Cllr Brday told the chamber that road was impassable: “I want to know who was responsible? In this day and age to spend so much money on a bridge and have it cause such problems is unacceptable. Is Cavan County Council going to go after the contractors that undertook the work?”
Replying to the query, Senior Engineer Michael Heneghan gave an undertaking to examine the issue: “This is news to me. We will investigate what happened. I don't know what the problem is but it is not satisfactory that the level of investment would result in the problems you describe. We will look into it and give you an update on the matter.”
