Locals left puzzled after newspaper jigsaw mix-up
As diplomats scratch their heads to find a way forward after Britain triggered Article 50, officially starting the Brexit EU divorce process, locals were left contemplating a puzzle of a different kind after one internationally read newspaper moved Borders a little too far.
In engaging a unique jigsaw motif across its front page today, The Guardian newspaper graphic editors fumbled their lines to include large swaths of Co Cavan, Co Monaghan, Co Donegal, as well as parts of Co Louth and even Co Wicklow.
According to the graphic for the article titled 'Today Britain steps into the unknown', the lattice system of the jigsaw pieces removed signifying the UK, also included parts of north and west Cavan, much of Monaghan and Donegal, Dundalk, and a tiny piece of Wicklow.
“'Britain steps into the unknown' and they're taking Donegal and part of Cavan with them it seems... “, one Twitter user wrote. Another added, “you took Donegal + Cavan ? Do we get paid in jam?”
The visual and geographic faux pax has cause much mirth on social media, with Guardian Editor in Chief Catherine Viner at least seeing the funny side of the mistake, tweeting: “bloody jigsaws!”.
All joking aside, Prime Minister Theresa May has informed the British parliament that she accepts the decision to proceed with Brexit will carry consequences, as the letter delivered to Brussels this afternoon kick-started the two-year countdown to the UK’s departure from the EU.
“We understand that there will be consequences for the UK of leaving the EU. We know that we will lose influence over the rules that affect the European economy. We know that UK companies that trade with the EU will have to align with rules agreed by institutions of which we are no longer a part, just as we do in other overseas markets. We accept that,” she said.
