Cavan Townhall receives substantial funding for the Town Hall project
Cavan Townhall will undergo a major revamp thanks to the allocation of a three quarters of a million euro grant from the Department of Arts and Heritage. Minister Heather Humphreys said that the allocation was part of a departmental spend that represented “the most significant investment” in regional arts in a decade.
The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs made the announcement at the historic town centre location.
Minister Humphreys said that such an investment in Arts and Culture infrastructure is vital for communities: “Cavan Townhall is going to benefit from a grant of €750,000. I have to congratulate those who submitted an excellent application. It was of very high quality and outlined why they deserve this level of support.”
The announcement drew an enthusiastic reaction from the crowd: “As you can see here today it is very exciting for the arts. There is a very vibrant arts community in Cavan and the surrounding area, so this will further give them encouragement. It will also give them further studio space for artists and it will be a fine theatre.”
“There is a very strong tradition in Cavan and I am delighted to be in a position to provide funding to upgrade the facilities. It is putting culture and heritage at the centre of communities,” the Minister said.
After the announcement Deputy Brendan Smith complimented all involved in the application and said that the facility has the potential to enhance the local arts infrastructure. Deputy Niamh Smyth said that the funding will allow for the further development of arts and cultural infrastructure within the county and Senator Joe Reilly said that by bringing together arts interest into one space it promotes future growth in the sector.
