Overnight temperatures may dip to - 4 degrees
Met Eireann say that it is time to wrap up as temperatures are set to tumble tonight. The national meteorological service has issued a status yellow weather warning noting that Cavan and Monaghan may experience the lowest temperatures.
They say that it will be very cold under clear skies tonight, with a sharp to severe frost, together with a few patches of mist and fog away from Atlantic coasts. The predictions are that the lowest temperatures will be between 0 and - 4 degrees.
The cold will not be problem for long as winds should freshen early on Tuesday, helping to clear any overnight frost or ice patches. A largely dry bright start to the day, outbreaks of rain will move in across the western half of the country by late morning, pushing eastwards in the afternoon.
A few heavy bursts are likely, with low cloud and mist too. The overnight cold will be well and truly dispatched by afternoon, when temperatures should range from 5 to11, in moderate to fresh southwest winds.
Cavan County Council advise motorists to ensure their vehicles are adequately prepared for winter driving and adapt driving to the prevailing conditions. They say that you should err on the side of caution; Your life may depend on it.
Meanwhile 23 December is set to be stormy with “very wet and very windy” conditions and a chance of weather warnings. Forecasters are warning of gales of up to 120kph predicted. Met Eireann said that wet and windy episodes are expected from Friday to Christmas Day.
