Make your voice heard and reunite Cavan

Cavan and Monaghan voters are being urged to make their voices heard as the Constituency Commission is now seeking submissions on the make-up of Dáil constituencies.
West Cavan voters were left outraged when the Dáil approved the 2012 recommendations of the Commission that ousted them from the Cavan Monaghan constituency, and into the hodge-podge consituency of Sligo-Leitrim, which also annexed south Donegal.
The population increase in the latest draft census gives hope of the Cavan-Monaghan boundary being restored to its natural state. However the recommendations of the independent Constituency Commission are crucial as their report is usually passed through the Dáil as a matter of course.
Submissions to the Commission should be forwarded by January 10, 2017 and the Commission will report by June 2017.
“The reunification of Co. Cavan for Dáil Constituency purposes is essential for the future economic and social development of Co. Cavan,” said Deputy Brendan Smyth, who has helped the Celt’s #reunitecavan campaign.

Support for restoration 'strong’
A member of the executive of Cavan County Council also addressed the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht and highlighted the need for the Cavan-Monaghan constituency to be reunited.
Eoin Doyle, Director of Services, in his address noted that the division of the county into two separate lots has been “to put it mildly, unpopular. Cross-party support for the constituency’s restoration is strong”.

Direct submissions
Independent submissions, meanwhile, can be sent to The Secretary, Constituency Commission, Room 1.65, Custom House, Dublin 1, D01 W6XO before January 10, 2017.
