Tidy Towns results well deserved
Cavan County Council has issued a statement welcoming yesterday's Tidy Towns results.
“We are very happy with this year’s Tidy Town Results and would like to congratulate all the Tidy Towns groups on their results. All the towns and villages which took park this year have increased their overall score from 2015. This is definitely something to be proud of and well deserved given the hard work by all the Tidy Towns members in the county. Cavan County Council look forward to working with all the groups in the coming year and hope that in working together we can aim for continued success in the Tidy Towns Competitions,” a spokesperson for the county council said.
Cavan is the tidiest town in the county for the eighth year in a row, according to the results of this year’s Tidy Towns Awards, which were announced on Monday, with Skerries taking the top award nationally.
The result is somewhat in contrast to the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) League results announced earlier this month. They saw Cavan Town slipped to 31st out of 40 towns surveyed nationally, its lowest position in 14 years ago.
With 314 points, however, in the Tidy Towns Competition, Cavan was deemed the tidiest in the Breffni County, followed by Redhills on 304 points and Loch Gowna with 291 points.
In Category A - for villages with a population of 200 or less - Redhills came out tops, for the first time breaching the 300 barrier. The village was followed in second by Gowna and Maghera in third (266).
Arvagh, with a score of 263, came out tops in Category B - for villages or towns with a population of 201-1,000. Kilnaleck was second with 254 points, while Ballinagh came in third on 244.
Moving to Category C, population up to 2,500, Killeshandra came first with a score of 286, followed by Belturbet (274) and Mullagh in third (271).
Virginia took top place in Category D, for towns with a population of up to 5,000. The east Cavan town achieved a score of 275, with Ballyjamesduff coming in second on 264 points.
Cavan Town was the sole entrant in Category F in the county for towns with 10,001 to 15,000 people but the county town attained the highest score across all categories in the county.
