'Mindless vandalism' at Bailieborough playground

Fianna Fáil TD for Cavan-Monaghan Niamh Smyth has condemned the latest act of vandalism at Bailieborough playground.

Last September, new equipment to the value of €5,000 was installed. The money for the new inclusive play equipment for children with disabilities and able-bodied children was donated by local businesses and families within the town of Bailieborough.

'Over the last number of days, local parents have reported to my office in Bailieborough that the book boxes have been vandalised,' said the party's Arts spokesperson.

'At the time of this investment in the playground, the local community appealed to the public to donate second hand books for their newly installed book box in an effort to encourage children to read more. This mindless vandalism is an attack on the community and on the most vulnerable people in it.

'In March of last year, after a piece of new equipment was installed (a special needs swing), the playground was vandalised. At that time it resulted in the playground being closed because it was unsafe. One of the smaller roundabouts was completely pulled from the ground – leaving it dangerous for children to play. The entire community shouldn’t have to suffer, because of the mindless acts of one or two.,' she said.

Deputy Smyth has called on those involved in this anti-social behaviour to desist and she has also been in contact with the Gardaí in relation to the matter.
