Stroke Support Group to host first meeting
A meeting place for people affected by stroke- patients, family members, carers and friends has been organised by Cavan -Monaghan Hospital, with the first meeting to take place at the Johnston Library in Cavan Town to first commence on Tuesday, June 21.
The first of its kind for the region and free to attend, meetings will be held from 11am-12.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month (July 19, August 16, and September 20, 2016).
Organisers say that while everyone’s experience of having a stroke is different, meeting other stroke survivors or caregivers who understand what a person is going through can help throughout recovery.
Stroke is the third cause of death and is the leading cause of disability in Ireland, with approximately 7,500 new strokes diagnosed in Ireland per annum.
In November 2011 Cavan General Hospital opened an Inpatient stroke care area with dedicated multi-disciplinary team with specialist skills in stroke. This team includes medical staff, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and dietetics. This has improved outcomes for local stroke patients, with patients also benefiting from rapid access to the rehab services in Monaghan Hospital.
