Something for the sole this weekend

The Cavan Walking Festival kicks its heels into action today with the launch of a variety of walks of various lengths and themes at the Cavan County Museum.
The 10-day festival puts its best foot forward at the Ballyjamesduff Museum with a family-friendly 'Reflective Heritage Walk’ of 2.5km followed by a poetry recital.
Grainne Boyle of the Cavan Sports Partnership says the festival is county-wide with something for everyone with even something for the sole at the Jampa Ling retreat.
“We have walks all over the county with different themes and levels, for example we have a walk in Bailieborough there’s a family-friendly walk for all with an informative nature guide and a scavengers’ hunt for children on the weekend’s shorter walk,” she says.
“There are walks for experienced hikers only, too, who need to pre-register and pay for those walks which are guided - The Cavan Way and The Cuilcagh Way - the popular Teddy Bear walk in Killykeen is actually fully-booked.
“This weekend is the main weekend with the festival launch in Ballyjamesduff starting with a guided walk through the World War trench and poetry reading after.
“There’s something on more or less every day with scenic walks, for example, in Fleming’s Folly in Ballinagh; there’s a lot in the Burren Park itself with the Golden Way walks; Lough an Lea is particularly scenic [May 5]; there might be 100-150 on the registered hiking walks and then there’s the Jampa Ling walk, which has a mindfulness element to it so there’s a lot of variation and something for everyone but we are trying to get more children and families involved and the programme reflects that. “Last year we had anywhere between 1,000 and 1,500 and there’s great interest across the board again this year - people can get information by ringing (049) 437 8582, go to www.cavansportspartnership.ie or go to the Facebook page.”
