Bus Eireann managers to meet with gardaí over rock attacks on 109 route to Cavan
Bus Éireann managers in Cavan have met with gardaí to discuss issues around a recent spate of rock attacks on buses on the 109 route approaching Cavan Town from the Dublin road.
It's understood that if such attacks persist, the company may be to change the bus route as it approaches the town centre, particularly around the times of the attacks.
A spokesperson for Bus Éireann said of the matter: “Anti-social behaviour on a part of the Dublin Road in Cavan Town has recently resulted in glass panels being broken on several Bus Éireann vehicles, while in service.
'The safety of our passengers and staff remain a priority at all times and local management in Cavan will met senior gardaí there about the matter tomorrow.
'In the interim, the situation – and our service provision in the area – remains under review.”
Gardaí are appealing to members of the public to come forward with information about the stone-throwings, the latest of which occurred on April 5 when a bus was pelted with rocks causing significant damage. It was the fourth such reported incident on the route in recent months.
All of the reported attacks have occurred as buses approach the Breffni Park area in the early to mid-evening, between 5-9pm, and several cases have seen windscreens or other glass smashed.
The Anglo-Celt understands that any damage to buses leads to significant cost, not just in repairing the damage which can be as much as €1,000, but also in terms of sourcing a replacement vehicle while the other is off the road.
Anyone with information in relation to the attacks are asked to contact Cavan Garda Station on 049 4368800.
