Breifne college gets departmental green light
The development of a new multi-million euro extension of facilities at existing Breifne College, Cavan Town, has been officially given the go-ahead by the Department of Education. It’s the second major school infrastructural project to be granted for Cavan-Monaghan Education and Training Board after a similar green light was given in respect of the long-awaited new school in the East Cavan town of Kingscourt.
While the latter has gone to tender, a process due to conclude later this week, tender documents for the Breifne College are currently being finalised, due for release it’s expected in the autumn.
“It’s exciting move forward for the school and one not before time I think,” CEO of CMETB Martin O’Brien told The Anglo-Celt last week.
“The building when it’s completed will be a great addition to that approach from that side of the town. It will be built to the highest specifications in heat retention, in terms of student accommodation and, I think, it will be fantastic evolution of the school going forward,” he said.
Along with the Cootehill project being pushed forward, with work hoped to commence before the end of the year, the extension of the school has also received an increased budget.
To include extra classroom accommodation, a gymnasium, fitness suite and new ball courts, the Quilligan architect-designed extension will see the demolition of the current sports hall.
“The new funding is very welcome. We are using a common-sense approach plan to redevelop the school from this one major extension. The growth of the school had outgrown the original plans for an extension and, what we have done, is future-proof the facility we have there.”
