Fianna Fail Cllr Niamh Smyth.

Dangers to pedestrians walking to shercock playground

At a recent council meeting, Fianna Fail’s Niamh Smyth raised the “urgent” need for improvements to the footpaths in Shercock.
“This is a massive project for the local community but [community group] Shercock-Killann Rural Development [SKRD] has expressed huge enthusiasm to see it happen,” she said.
Working with SKRD, Cllr Smyth says she submitted a ‘Community Involvement Application’ for funding but “with the overall cost of this particular project coming in at €270k, it is over and above the total amount allocated to the council for the entire county”.
“Other options must be investigated by Cavan County Council to provide this much-needed facility. Pedestrian safety is not an option, it’s a must,” said Cllr Smyth.
“Children and parents must be able to walk safely to the local playground. Otherwise, this important facility is not reaching its full potential and completely excludes sectors of the community that do not drive or don’t have access to a car during the daytime.”
Cllr Smyth says she has worked closely with residents and business people in Shercock and is “thrilled” with the recent announcement from Cavan County Council that funding has been allocated to two projects in Shercock that will bring “a splash of colour” and help local residents living in Corkerstown Housing Estate to improve their recreational space over the summer months.
“I am delighted that we have secured funding for SKRD towards installing new poles to erect hanging baskets in the main street to brighten and add a splash of colour the main street.
“This community group works very hard for the betterment of Shercock, therefore support from the local authority is important and rewarding for volunteers who give so much of themselves and their spare time to get things done in the community,” she said.
