Four arrested after suspected device discovered in longford
As part of ongoing investigations into dissident republican activity gardaí arrested four men, ranging in age from late 20s to late 40s yesterday (Wednesday, June 24) following the discovery of a suspected improvised explosive device in County Longford.
The suspect device was found in a vehicle on the R392 at Forgney, close to Ballymahon.
Gardaí attached to the Special Detective Unit and Crime and Security Section swooped to make the arrests.
The four men are currently detained at Garda Stations in County Longford under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 as amended.
The scene was preserved and a safety cordon put in place. The R392 was closed at Forgney to facilitate the Army Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit who attended the scene. The scene was later declared safe and the road reopened.
A house that was searched in a follow up search has been preserved for a technical examination. Investigations are continuing.
