Firearm and explosive parts discovered in glenfarne

Gardai have recovered a firearm, subject to technical examination, and suspected component parts for explosives in Leitrim today.

At approximately 11.45am this morning gardai on traffic enforcement duties stopped a car at Glenfarne, a kilometre from the Cavan border, on the N16 Sligo-to-Blacklion Road. On searching the vehicle they discovered a pistol, again subject to technical examination and suspected component parts for explosives.

Two males in their 20s were arrested at the scene and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Manorhamilton Garda Station.

The scene is currently preserved and the assistance of the Army EOD has been requested. Local diversions are in place.
