Antiausterity march planned for cavan
A protest march against austerity will take place in Cavan Town on May 23. Organised by the ‘Cavan Says No to Water Charges’ group, it will leave from Argos carpark at 1pm and make its way to the Market Square where there will be guest speakers.
Mick McDermott from the group told the Celt that the reason behind the march is to highlight issues surrounding austerity. “We now have a situation in Ireland where over 1,000 children are homeless and the number of families being evicted from their homes has increased by 40% since June 2014,” he said.
Mr McDermott stresses that people only have to look at the amount of possession orders before the courts in order to see why the homeless figures have increased so much. He’s urging people not to forget that it was the people of Ireland that bailed out the banks. “Yet, we stand back and let them evict people from their homes.”
This will be the third protest march in Cavan Town. The group claims that the first two protests brought out crowds of up to 3,000 people on the streets. “Yes our first two marches in Cavan were very successful, more recently we marched on RTÉ and Irish Water HQ in Dublin and we have had great support from around the country. We have formed the Water Action Alliance, a combined approach with groups from around the country involved,” Mr McDermott told the Celt.
“This next protest is being supported by groups from Donegal to Cork so the number people travelling on the day will be big and we hope to have a great atmosphere. We have a number of prominent speakers lined up who will be speaking on a range of critical issues that are affecting much of our daily lives due to government implemented austerity,” he said.
