Protest planned for council meeting on monday

Anti-water charges campaigners will demonstrate outside Monday’s monthly meeting of Cavan County Council. The demonstration has been called to protest the handing over of tenants’ names and addresses to Irish Water.

Tenants from Glenlara and Kilnavara, who have been blocking the installation of meters in their estates in recent weeks, are among those organising the demonstration.
The residents say they are worried about personal information being given to a private company without their consent.
In November, the council, along with 15 other local authorities, passed a 'no confidence’ vote in Irish Water.

Ardamagh man Emmett Smith of the 'Cavan Says No’ group said: “We are calling on all council tenants who are unhappy with the decision of Cavan County Council to pass their details to Irish Water to join us next Monday.
“We will gather at the courthouse from 1.45pm and the Council meeting is due to begin at 2.30pm. We hope that councillors on their way in to the meeting will stop and explain to us why they are handing over the tenants’ details to an organisation that they have publicly stated they have 'No Confidence’ in.
“If they cannot give us a reasonable explanation then we will have to wonder if there was any point in passing the 'No Confidence’ motion in the first place last November.
“Is Cavan County Council just an ineffective talking shop? It will be up to the councillors themselves to answer that question.”
Cavan County Council acting CEO Ger Finn says that the list of addresses being handed over to Irish Water is “a legal requirement” on which the council has “does not have a choice”.
