Ming paul murphy td jailed water protester bernie hughes to speak tonight
One of the four water-meter protesters released from Mountjoy Prison last week, will speak in Cavan Town tonight (Friday).
The 'National Water Charges Boycott’ meeting, organised by local water tax protesters, is at 7pm in the Meadow View Inn, Dublin Road.
Campaigner Bernie Hughes, who served 28 days for protesting meter installation, will speak alongside Paul Murphy (Anti-Austerity Alliance) TD, Luke Ming Flanagan MEP and Dr Conor McCabe of UCD School of Equality. The meeting is organised by the 'Cavan Water Charges Opposition Group’.
Bernie Hughes along with three other protesters, were released last week due to mistakes in the orders committing them to prison. Paul Murphy TD was arrested in February in relation to a protest in Jobstown, Dublin, last year. No stranger to civil disobedience, Finglas native Hughes was also jailed for two weeks in 2003 by the High Court in Dublin for contempt over her bin tax collection charge protest.
'No confidence’
“Water meter installation has recently begun in County Cavan, too, even though the council voted 'no confidence’ in Irish Water last November,” says local organiser Emmett Smith.
“At a meeting in Ballyjamesduff on Monday (March 16), people began organising resistance to meter installations in the county. There have already been several local protests at installations to date, and more are planned. Further meetings are planned to organise protests in Cavan, Kilnaleck and Virginia.
Cavan Water Charges Opposition Group, who had a float in yesterday’s parade also heavily leafleted the event and has organised a coach to leave Cavan Bus Station tomorrow at 9am (Saturday, March 21), to take people to the Right 2 Water national demonstrations in Dublin.
