John wilson considers running for next general election
Garda whistleblower John Wilson is considering running as a candidate in the next general election.
Wilson, who had intended running in the local elections in the Cavan area but was forced to pull out after being diagnosed with bowel cancer, received word yesterday from oncologists he had beaten the illness.
Speaking to The Anglo-Celt he said he was “extremely lucky” to be alive and, after being given the all-clear, is now looking at a number of opportunities including dipping his toe back into the political arena.
“I said it before, that it was always something I was interested in doing,” said the chairperson of the 'Justice 4 All' group, which seeks to assist victims of Garda malpractice and Garda corruption.
“I know it's cliché, but I'm a person who is very driven by the needs of the people.”
Acknowledging the difficulties of running for election in 2016, with the number of seats in local constituencies reduced, Mr Wilson said: “Tens of thousands of people feel alienated by this government. I know I can't solve everyone's problem. No one can solve every issue out there but I feel at least I can help.”
