Cavan man dies in Roscommon lake incident

The Cavan man who died in an incident in Roscommon where a car he was travelling in entered a lake near Strokestown has been named as Shane Donnelly from Ballyjamesduff.

The chief administrator at Meath County Council, and former Navan Town Clerk, Mr Donnelly, died in an incident in Roscommon when the car he was travelling in entered a lake near Strokestown.

Gardaí from Boyle, County Roscommon are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident which occurred at Grange, Strokestown, just after midnight on Sunday 22nd December. A vehicle carrying two people entered a lake and Mr Donnelly, aged 37 years, was subsequently pronounced dead.

The female driver, aged 34-years, was uninjured and sought help from locals who removed passenger from vehicle and made attempts to resuscitate him. However, the father-of-three was pronounced dead and removed to Roscommon General Hospital where a post mortem is to take place.

Cavan native Mr Donnelly was regarded as a very able administrator and was responsible for driving many of the initiatives that took place in Navan in recent years, including the new public park, and the streetscape works and Market Square bull monument.

Mr Donnelly is survived by his wife, Aisling, children, Callum, Kate and Sarah, father Matt, mother Geraldine, brothers Colin, Edward and Niall, father in law Barry, mother in law Marian, sisters in law, brothers in law, nephews, nieces, cousin, aunts, uncles, all his relatives and friends.

Funeral Arrangements

Reposing at his home at Carrickavee, Ballyjamesduff on Tuesday Christmas Eve from 12 noon until 10pm. Removal from home on Christmas Day to St Mary’s Church, Castlerahan arriving for funeral mass at 12.30. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. No flowers please, donations in lieu to St Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan c/o John or Philip McMahon, Funeral Directors, Cavan or any family member.
