Cavan County Council is hurriedly rectifying an error which saw a number of Australian national flags hung the wrong way up ahead of the International Rules Series first test which takes place at Kingspan Breffni Park later this month, October 19.
Brought to the attention of both the Council and this newspaper by one eagle-eyed local, a spokesperson for the local authority confirmed that of the 30 Australian flags that were hung, eight were hung upside down in error.
“This is currently being rectified,” the spokesperson said.
The national flag of Australia is described as a blue field with the Union Jack in the canton (upper hoist quarter), and a large white seven-pointed star known as the Commonwealth Star in the lower hoist quarter. The fly contains a representation of the Southern Cross constellation, made up of five white stars – one small five-pointed star and four, larger, seven-pointed stars.
An action packed weekend programme where 'Fun Rules’ will take place as part of the overall Ireland v Australia match festivities.
Highlights include traditional music, street theatre, sessions, exhibitions, busking, family fun, an outdoor gig with irish bands Fresh Re, Ham Sandwich and Bipolar Empire, a trad concert with the 2013 Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Tour group, and the return of Eleanor Shanley with special guests.
