Discover Belturbet Day

Belturbet has been chosen as a location in the Lakelands and Inland Waterways region to host a "Discover Day" on Saturday, September 3, showcasing what is on offer in the area. Organised by Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Cavan County Council and local business leaders, the open day will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the tourism assets of the Belturbet area. Martin Dennany, director of marketing and communications, Waterways Ireland says: "We are delighted to be involved with the Discover Belturbet initiative and are confident that the day will be a great success and provide a superb platform to highlight all the wonderful things to do and see in Belturbet, as key location within the wider Lakelands region." Speaking at a recent launch of Discover Belturbet, Joanne Hayes, Cavan County tourism officer, agreed that the people of Belturbet have an important role to play as ambassadors for their area and the County Council was pleased to join with Fáilte Ireland and Waterways Ireland in highlighting awareness of Belturbet's visitor facilities among the local population through this showcase and enhancing their capacity to promote tourism in Belturbet. A range of product offerings will be on display including visitor attractions, face painting, entertainment and activities. Everyone will be able to enjoy a historical walking tour of Belturbet, angling demonstrations, boat trips and see the best of local craft producers work their magic in their chosen craft. Events are being co-ordinated locally via a steering group formed from representatives of local businesses and people led by Fidelma Tinneny, a Belturbet native, who has recently returned to live locally after living for some time in the UK. Fidelma says that Belturbet is a hidden gem in Ireland. "With the river running through our pretty town, fishing and boating a plenty, beautiful scenery, a rich history, great walks and cycling opportunities, wonderful local produce and skills, sports, music, dancing, acting, great clubs and talented people, we have it all! September 3 is a wonderful opportunity for Belturbet people to show their wares and skills, their hospitality and welcome, and remind each other and visitors of all that we do have." The Discover Belturbet initiative is part of a broader campaign to develop and promote Ireland's Lakelands and Inland Waterways and which aims to significantly boost visitor numbers to the Lakeland region over the coming years.
