Cavan Person of the Year for 2010 is David Mulligan
David Mulligan was named The Anglo-Celt Rehab Cavan Person of the Year 2010 at a gala banquet in the Hotel Kilmore last Thursday evening. David was nominated and selected for his work with many good causes - as he puts it himself to describe the number of charitable organisations he is involved with: "Variety is the spice of life." Through having family members and friends with disabilities, David has always helped people with sensory and physical disabilities. He is a committee member and volunteer with Cavan MS and Cavan Access Association, was a member of Cavan Lions Club for 20 years, and was also a member of the Cavan branch of the Irish Wheelchair Association - so driving people on day trips or holidays, church gate collections and social events are regular parts of his life. He also loved being a member of Cavan Civil Defence, The Cavan Singers and Cavan Musical Society, but found that there were not enough nights in the week, and something had to stop. David is happily married to Margaret, who he describes as his rock and support, no matter what fundraising scheme he gets involved in. The latest is collecting used postage stamps to help raise funds for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind. He works for Gem Oils Cavan as an oil tanker driver, and in 2002 used his professional skills when he drove one of 19 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid to an orphanage in Belarus, with financial support from the staff at Gem Oils and Cavan Lions Club. His hobbies include line dancing, social and set dancing, attending concerts and theatre, and cycling and walking. His motto is, 'there are two types of people, those who are disabled, and those of us who are not yet disabled'. David once bought Margaret a bowl, and she still gets some amusement from the inscription on it: 'Please God - Not Another Meeting'.
