Carrigallen VS transition year students raised fund for charity by organising a cake sale in the school.

What is the difference between jig and reels?

In an interesting comment on the cyclical nature of history, Tom Morrow, ex-pupil and member of the traditional group Dervish, told assembled students of the school how he too had been taken to see various music groups in the Corn Mill during his days as a pupil. He had been impressed and inspired by these groups and gone on to a successful musical career. The group gave an explanation of their various instruments and how they functioned within the group as well as playing a few tunes and singing songs. (We will always be grateful that they unravelled the mystery of the differences between a reel and a jig at last!). Back at the school, some 50 students joined in the workshop the group gave. In no time at all, Dervish had the students, from diverse musical backgrounds with diverse instruments all singing from the same hymn sheet. Evening study Parents are advised that evening study for exam students (third and Leaving Cert) has begun for the year. Evening study is from 4.15-6.15pm Monday to Thursday and is an excellent opportunity for students to do their homework and or revision. Students who availed of study last year reported that it was a positive and helpful experience. The cost is €35 per term; contact the school 049-4339640. Football Senior Boys: This year, the school is well represented on the Leitrim VEC team, who played their first game of the season against Sligo and had a comfortable win. The first year boys reached the final of the Brady Cup but lost to Ballinamore. The junior girls recorded a resounding win over Drumshanbo VS, and their next game is against Abbey in Boyle. The senior girls beat Lough Allen College and their next game is against Roscommon Community School. Poetry Aloud The school was once again represented this year by a number of students at the Regional Poetry Aloud competition in the Ursuline Convent in Sligo. TY student Barry Goldrick was commended for his delivery of Beautiful Lofty Things. Other students who took part were Kate Reilly, Grainne Donegan, Ciara Gaffney, Charlotte Morton, Deirdre Rawle, Desree Craddock, Aisling Maguire, Grainne Brady, Maedbh Donohoe, Donal McCabe, Chloe McIntyre, Aoife Pollock and Dylan Mimna. Thank you to the hard work of Ms Comyns who trained the students and Ms. Grey who accompanied them on the day. Transition year It's been a baptism of fire for our first group of TY students. They have been busy and kept on their toes since September with diverse projects. In addition to the academic classes, they have taken part in an enterprise and job seeking skills information day, an enterprise visit to Belleek Pottery and Rossinver Organic Centre, a Voluntary Organisations Awareness Day with speakers and a poetry workshop with Noel Monaghan. They began their first week of work placement on November 8. Music Club The confident display of the students at the Dervish workshop was a factor in the decision to set up a music club in the school. The school already has an excellent working choir under the guidance of Mary Harte. She will be joining forces with Ms Flynn, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Murtagh to bring together song and instrument. The club has plans for future ventures. Watch this space...
