Cavan’s Sharing Our Community

One hundred and thirty young people from County Cavan have received certificates for completing their County Cavan Sharing Our Community project. The project involved students from secondary schools St. Bricin’s College, Belturbet, The Royal School Cavan, St. Patrick’s College, Cavan, Breifne College Cavan and St. Mogue’s College Bawnboy. The event was organised for students following their completion of Diversity Workshops and Cross Community events. Four students from Breifne College ran the event and called on the speakers of the day to say a few words. Rose Luby, guidance counsellor at Breifne College, commented on the positive aspects of the programme: “I want to thank Cavan PEACE III, Cavan County Council and CAVAN VEC for this opportunity,” she said. “It has been beneficial for our students, who had heard words like sectarianism and racism before but now they have an understanding of what they are and they can appreciate diversity within our society. They also really enjoyed the time meeting other students and discussing these topics with their peers. Sincere thanks also to all the volunteers.” Jane Crudden, PEACE III project development officer, presented students with their certificates. The project allowed them to examine beliefs about religion, culture and sectarianism, and to examine the similarities and differences among communities. The aims of the Sharing Our Community project are to build positive relationships among communities from different cultures and traditions. The project also challenges attitudes towards sectarianism and racism and promotes cultural diversity. The project was delivered in partnership with County Cavan VEC and supported by PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by County Cavan PEACE III Peace and Reconciliation Partnership.
