Possessed illegal pills A Ballyhaise man who had a number of illegal pills and cannabis in his possession was handed a suspended sentence when he pleaded guilty to the offences at a sitting of Cavan District Court. Damien O'Connell, 28 Annalee Manor, Ballyhaise, was sentenced to six months in prison suspended on him entering a Probation Bond to keep the peace for two years. He was charged with possessing an ecstasy tablet at Fairtown, Cavan, on May 2. Charges of possessing cannabis and diazepam pills (valium) were taken into account. Garda Ger O'Shaughnessy said the defendant was stopped at Fairtown for the purpose of a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act. During the search of his car a bag of cannabis, an ecstasy table and four diazepam pills discovered. During the search of a car he was working on, two other bags of cannabis were discovered in a torch. Assaulted former partner A 36-year-old Lithuanian national who pleaded guilty to assaulting his former partner was handed a suspended sentence when he appeared at a sitting of Cavan District Court in connection with the offence. Vitalijus Kundrotas, 44 Bree, Castleblayney, was charged with assaulting Jurate Nenartenione at Flat 1, Bar one, Main Street, Castleblayney, on October 3, and was sentenced to three months suspended on his entering a bond to keep the peace for two years. Inspector John Dollard said the defendant returned to the apartment he shared with his then partner Ms. Nenartenione and punched her in the mouth. Gardai were called and he admitted hitting his partner. Erin McKiernan, solicitor defending, said they had been out drinking earlier in the night. He was pleading guilty to the offence and was willing to stay away from the victim. Judge Sean MacBride said the defendant would have to pay his victim €500 in compensation and he would impose a suspended sentence. He also ordered that the defendant have no contact with the victim or put her in fear, threatened, molest her or have any contact with her. The defendant was warned that if he committed any crime he would serve the suspended sentence. Sent forward for trial A Meath woman who had cannabis for sale or supply in Cavan town last June has been returned for trial to the next sitting of Cavan Circuit Court on October 27 when she appeared at the local District Court. Cheryl Dunne, 18 Beechalawn, Navan, was charged with having the cannabis for sale or supply at Farnham Street, Cavan, on June 5. She was also charged with possessing the drug on the same occasion. She was further charged with similar offences at No. 2 West End, Granard Road, Ballyjamesduff. Remanded in custody Andrzej Caluch, Cois Samh, Fardromin, Ballinamuck, Longford, was remanded in custody to appear at Cavan District Court on October 22 charged with trespassing the home of Karen Sheridan, at Grousehall, Loughduff, Ballinagh, on October 9, when he appeared at a sitting of Cavan District Court. Drink driving The following were fined at Cavan District Court for driving with excess alcohol: Olegs Gerasimovs, Ballyheelan, Kilnaleck, 55mg/100ml breath, €500 and disqualified for four years; Jerzy Poterek, 11 johnston Court, 62mg/100ml breath, €300 and disqualified for two years three months; and Terence Reynolds, Gortermone, Carrigallen, 84mg/100ml breath. €150 and disqualified for three years.
