New sinkhole at Magheracloone

Monaghan County Council have informed the public that the opening of a nine metre wide sinkhole outside of Kingscourt will necessitate the closure of the public road.
A statement from Gyproc explained the discovery: “Gyproc as part of their ongoing monitoring of Drumgoosat mine workings discovered a sinkhole on 19th December on Gyproc land and wish to carry out some geotechnical investigations close to the L4900.

“The investigations over the coming weeks will require Gyproc to locate plant and machinery along a section of the road and carry out drilling in close proximity to the road. The council are closing a section of the L4900 to expedite those works . Please note that this sinkhole is entirely separate to the subsidence on the GAA site in September,” a spokesperson siad.

The LP4900 local road will be closed to traffic. Monaghan County Coucil said: “Following the emergence of a new sinkhole on lands owned by Gyproc, Monaghan County Council has closed the LP4900 local road at Drumgossat, Magheracloone as a precautionary measure, with immediate effect.

“The sinkhole measuring nine metres in diameter is located 35 metres from the local road. Local Diversions are now operating to the school and church and the road will remain closed until further notice. The R179 Regional Road between Carrickmacross and Kingscourt is unaffected and remains open.”

Monaghan County Council have apologised to all local householders and businesses for the inconvenience.
